Whether you’ve been driving an electric car for years or have just newly acquired your eco-friendly vehicle, it’s important to take care of the battery to ensure it runs smoothly for years to come. So, here are our five top tips to help you do just that.

Avoid charging to the max

It’s bad practice to charge your car to 100% regularly. Whilst the temptation is no doubt there when charging at home or work, if you repeat this frequently, you’ll be shortening the battery life of your vehicle. The more you can avoid charging to the max, the better, and instead only look to do this when travelling for long journeys.

Avoid fast chargers

Where you can help it, it’s also best to avoid using fast chargers. The reason being this type of charge point will run higher currents through the battery and therefore will affect the overall battery health. Of course, there will be times where utilising a fast charger will be required but where you can, you’re much better going with the slower option.

Keep your foot off the accelerator

One big piece of advice, which those who often find themselves in a hurry may not be pleased to hear, is that driving slower will conserve energy used from your battery. So, ultimately the faster you drive, the faster you’ll run out of charge too. Plus, getting into the habit of keeping your foot off the accelerator will do wonders for the health of your car’s battery over time.

Be mindful of extreme weather

It’s important to keep in mind that extreme temperatures will also have an impact on the battery life of your EV. For example, on a particularly hot day make sure to park in a shaded spot as this will prevent your battery overheating and reducing charge.

Plan your route

Before taking a long journey, our biggest piece of advice is to plan ahead and decide which charge stations you will need to visit along the way. You can drop these into your navigation device in your car and this will pre-condition the battery to charge at the fastest rate possible.
